        Lucy’s 2023 Newsletter

Lucy Leaf had a fun and successful year of 2022, but now she is anxious to get started in sharing her enthusiasm with as many children as possible.

After resting through the more wintery months, Lucy Leaf had her first craft fair at Bangor High School’s Spring Craft Fair on March 18th. It was a good way to start off the year.

Next, Lucy Leaf had her first book signing at Sherman’s Family Bookstore in Portland. What fun that was!! She really liked that and would love to do more.

In the meantime, Pam was doing her best to get Lucy Leaf into some local stores and the first store to sell Lucy Leaf was Tiller and Rye in Brewer in March, followed by Bookstacks in Bucksport in May. Next, as of June, Lucy can be found at Patrick’s Hallmark on Broadway in Bangor.

Lucy Leaf also ended up in 3 libraries…Brewer Library, Bucksport Library and a school library in an elementary school in Indiana! She is getting around. She went into the Maine State Library and Bangor Library last year.

In May Lucy Leaf was at the Viles Arboretum in Augusta for a spring craft fair. Nice to be in a different area. Also in May, Lucy Leaf was at a book signing at another Sherman’s store, this time in Bar Harbor (this Leaf gets around). This was a ton of fun and very successful. It was a very busy Memorial Day weekend and the people were wall to wall, inside the store and out.

In June, Lucy Leaf attended a Spring Festival in Brewer, ME. What a day, and not in a good way. The weather was terrible, very cold, rainy and windy. There were not many people out and about.

Must be something with June…on the 24th at the Brewer Farmer’s Market Craft Fair, we got rained out!! Better luck next time.

In July, we had to order a 3rd printing of Lucy Leaf. We ordered 50 books with all of them coming to me.

August started our busy time with a craft fair at Bucksport’s Hot August Nights Parade and Custom Car Show. Loved the time, noon to 6pm. We also got rained out here, but it wasn’t until around 4pm and all the people had left. All the vendors decided to leave also, so the fair was cut short by a couple of hours.

Also, in August, we got an email from Aid for Kids in Houlton, ME. They were asking us if we wanted to be a part of their Educational Fair. We, of course, said yes. Betty (Lucy Leaf’s illustrator) went with us and it was very interesting and successful. Hope to return next year.

Around this time, we received an email from Spraque’s Nursery and Garden Center. More on that later.

I was able to get us into a Vendor Bender craft fair in Bucksport with only a couple days to prepare. That was fun. Dave (Pam’s husband) went with us and we were set up on the town’s dock. It was very windy and I couldn’t use any of my signs or my poster. But we punted and actually had a very successful fair. This is where Lucy Leaf was bought for the Bucksport Library.

Around this time, Pam finally got note cards made. She had been wanting to do this for a while. They came out so cute!! There are six different cards, all pictures right from the book. They should be very popular.

Now to Sprague’s Nursery….they have a Fall Family Festival every year and this year they asked me to read Lucy Leaf as the first event, followed by Mr. Drew and his animals (mostly reptiles) and finally, Zachary Field, an amazing juggling entertainer. Well, wouldn’t you know that a hurricane decided to come to Maine on that day? But the show must go on!! The weather was not bad when we set up at 8:30 and we were pretty optimistic, but there weren’t many people there for my reading so that did not get done. But, boy, did they show up for Mr. Drew!! The place was full of not only children, but their parents as well. The animals were a huge draw! Even Dave, who went with us, spent a lot of time at the animal area. The weather started to get worrisome around 10:30 and the crowd left around noon as did we. I don’t know if Zachary Field ever arrived. This was the first time Lucy Leaf note cards were available and we were happy with the response. We had an awesome time and sold many books and some cards.

That will bring you up to date on Lucy Leaf and her escapades so far this year.

Stay tuned for more adventures!
